Kwanzaa Day 6: Kuumba with Carrie Mae Weems on Inspiration for the Nation

Happy Kwanzaa from George Kilpatrick Inspiration for the Nation! The sixth principle is Kuumba (Creativity) and logically follows from and is required by the principle of Nia. Internationally acclaimed visual artist Carrie Mae Weems comes to Inspiration for the Nation to talk about doing as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it.

It is a commitment to being creative within the context of the national community vocation of restoring our people to their traditional greatness and thus leaving our community more beneficial and beautiful than we, i.e., each generation, inherited it. The principle has both a social and spiritual dimension and is deeply rooted in the social and sacred teachings of African societies.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world …. as we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. (Nelson Mandela)

Happy Kwanzaa from George Kilpatrick Inspiration for the Nation! Davine Bey, Head of Talent Management at Syracuse University, shares the principle of Ujamaa or Cooperative Economics, maintaining and supporting our communities economically.

One of the ways black communities, in particular, can prosper, is if individuals support these entrepreneurs in the community. It’s an immigrant tradition. This is one way for the community to grow, create and generate new wealth. I love the idea of cash mobs, so you and 10 of your friends decide that you are going to spend each to make a small-business person happy. The big- box stores can wait.
